Introduction to GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Toolboxes

Why?

emBOLDen Alliances, a global nonprofit organization, and several local GIS Experts, who combined have more than 40 years of experience in mapping, are holding THREE sequential GIS Toolbox Sessions to meet your mapping, visual presentation, and data analysis needs. The mission of emBOLDen Alliances is to improve the lives of vulnerable communities through collaborative partnerships that embolden the quality and impact of service. We are dedicated to helping our partners strengthen service, measure meaningful outcomes, analyze and visualize data effectively, and demonstrate substantive impact.

What?

There will be THREE sequential trainings to meet Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced GIS needs.  Please select which one is the right fit for you or attend all three!

When?

Session I, Beginner class:  Thursday May 7:  5:30pm-8pm.
Session II, Intermediate class:  Wednesday May 13:  5:30pm-8pm.
Session III, Advanced class:  Thursday May 21:  5:30pm-8pm.

Session I

Who should attend? Any teacher, NGO member, or student with little to none prior experience in GIS who would like to learn the basics.

What will you gain?

  1. Recognize what GIS is and how is it used.
  2. Distinguish common map types, including General, Charts and Thematic.
  3. Formulate how to plan a map and what basic cartographic elements to include in your map.
  4. Recall how to create a story map using ArcGIS online’s story map templates.

What should you bring? Laptop to use ArcGISOnline during our session. You should pre-register for ArcGISOnline (FREE 30-day trial): http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline/evaluate

Cost: $25 per participant, limited to 20 participants maximum.

Session II

Who should attend? Any NGO member, teacher, or student who has basic GIS mapping knowledge and would like to learn how to visually present a dataset starting from assessment questionnaire through to mapping results.

What will you gain?

  1. Distinguish Raster vs. Vector data.
  2. Explore setting data frame coordinates and transformations.
  3. Practice adding data, viewing attributes, sorting and basic attribute queries.
  4. Apply working with Excel and/or CSV files which have lat/long coordinates.
  5. Familiarize digitizing and editing geospatial data and geo-referencing.

What should you bring? Laptop to use with ArcGIS Desktop loaded and ready to use during our session. You should pre-register for ArcGIS Desktop (FREE 60-day trial).  Download software to your laptop and test launching software prior to session: http://www.arcgis.com/features/free-trial.html.

Cost: $25 per participant, limited to 15 participants maximum.

Session III

Who should attend? Any NGO member, teacher, or student with intermediate GIS mapping knowledge and a specific GIS mapping question or need. Participants are required to submit their GIS question and associated relevant data 6 days prior to the Session III date.  Five to 7 of these will be reviewed and solved during the class session as instructional tools for all participants.

What will you gain?

  1. Solve a GIS problem using existing relevant data to suit organizational needs.
  2. Recognize other GIS analysis problems and solutions.

What should you bring?

  1. Laptop to use with ArcGIS Desktop loaded and ready to use during our session.
  2. Relevant data to analyze pre-loaded and ready for use during our session.

Cost: $30 per participant, limited to 10 participants maximum.
